Thanks for addressing the negative characterizations of African-American preachers and liberation theology.
Now the issue with Riverside...
issues of governance, by-laws, and constitution of the Riverside community compelled Rev. Braxton to resign from Riverside. I wonder if you got "Father Pflagered Out" of Riverside???hmmmm
Oh in response to the twitter comment about wanting "religion to die" ,,,the reason fighting exists in Ireland under the banner of religion has more to do with national sovereignty, not spirituality/religion.
Thanks for presenting the intellectual side of theology. You are correct that intellectual theology is like "Grandma's faith"...I am no intellectual but I am a grandma "Why should we attend church?"
Hebrews 10:25 "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the DAY approaching."

I don't understand what "Father Pflagered Out" means but I will say this: The first issued that came up in emails at Riverside after he was identified as the person selected to be the next Senior Minister was that of RACE. Yes, the worst kind of racism exists in Northern, Liberal institutions and there were some African- and Euro-American congregants who did not want a second African American Pastor at Riverside. (Read Dr. Braxton's book "No Longer Slaves: Galatians and the African American Experience. Many African Americans suffer from self hatred and believe the axiom "if it's white, it's right." Well, it ain't necessarily so and a lot of people at Riverside realize that now that he's gone.
The second issue concerned his spirituality. If the great "social justice" church had bothered to really listen to Dr. Braxton, it would have realized that he saw social justice as acts of courage following the teachings of the most courageous one of all, Jesus, in bringing true justice and peace to all, not 'all, but', just ALL, to the glory of God. Giving lip service to God and sitting within the Church's stone walls talking about social justice was enough for some but it was not getting the job done. If he had been given the chance to lead and pastor, I believe Riverside would have indeed risen to become a real center of justice and hope, something it likes to claim. Sadly is not nearly as visionary, prophetic, and effective as it thinks it is or more importantly, could have been.
In the interview, I was happy to hear Dr. Braxton say that he saw the Black church not only important to African Americans but to others as well, in this country and the world over. It's so true and I wish more of us believed it.
Dr. Braxton is a Pastor and Scholar. When he preaches, he teaches, and when he teaches, he preaches. He's a warm, caring person who knows his stuff. He has HEART and HEAD and there aren't too many like him. I'm blessed to call him Pastor.

The above is the wikipedia page to the Honorable Michael Pfleger...and below is the infamous youtube video...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWigzBClEk8
as a result Father Pflegar was ostracized...banished...and placed on "involuntary sabbatical" by the Catholic church for telling the truth and actually standing up for truth and social justice. This is what I mean when I say Pflegered Out...Yes it appears from the above that Dr. Braxton was "Pflegered Out"
Thus it appears that the issue is not necessarily race at Riverside but rather maintaining the STATUS QUO using the issue of race.
"...And it is the spirit who testifies because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that testify: the spirit, the water, and the blood and the three are in agreement. 1 John 5:8

Dr. Braxton is awesome. We are so very sorry that he did not remain at RSC, but believe that God is leading and that his ministry will continue to be a blessing to his family and all of us. As my daughter would say "he has the heart of a pastor." I pray that this year of discernment will be fruitful and hope that the 'endowed chair' will come into being.

as for me, i stopped coming around/canceled by pledge, after i heard one too many lame excuses for that 12k/month apt on the UWS. i voted for him, liked him personally, but dude, come on. (ironically, now we get to cut from the budget next year an amt almost equal to his package, exit and entrance, for 9 months of "work".
